Llamas
Gelded Male Llamas Available for Sale

Yes, we have two gelded male llamas available for sale at this time. Fuzzy is a brown llama, with a very thick coat. Copycat is a black and white llama.
They have all been haltered and tied. If you query on llamas, please include contact information in the body of the message sent through the website if you choose not to call...as that is how we know how to reach you!
Note: K. P., if you are still looking, please call (605) 865-3244 or use either the form or guestbook to provide us with a phone number or email address so we can contact you. Those messages are forwarded to my email account...however they don't automatically provide me with a return email or phone number for responses if that is not included in the message. I was unable to locate you so I could not reply. Sorry!

Every llama on the place has been run with horses and cattle and is adapted to large open pastures or smaller pens. All can be kept separate or run with compatible llama companions or companions of other species. [Two intact breeding males do not generally make compatible companions for each other, from what we've seen. They usually sort of like to argue about who is more "male." Our mature breeding males share fences often, but usually not pens or pastures. On the other hand, a breeding male and a young intact male will likely be great buddies till the young one grows up, and we often run a younger intact male with some of the gelded males. In some cases, two intact adult males will live together without fighting, when the females are kept well separate.]
I'd venture to say that all of the llamas here have seen coyotes...and that most have followed or chased coyotes across the pastures...we've seen it, from time to time. If, by some fluke, one of them hasn't seen a coyote, they'll have at least smelled them and checked out their trail in the grass.
Intact Male Llama
Please query if you are looking for an intact male llama as we may be willing to sell one of those we may have available.
Female Llama
At any given time, we might be willing to sell one female llama from our breeding herd. That will largely depend on our daughter's approval and her choice of which she'd sell, as she's the primary llama person around here. So, if you're local and looking, let us know. It doesn't hurt to ask. Just make sure we know how to contact you in return, if you don't wish to call directly.
Llama Fiber
While we don't usually shear most of our llamas, we do clip one occasionally if their hair coat is so thick that summer temps are a problem for them. We might consider clipping a few for fiber if someone wants to buy some raw fiber from us. All clipping would have to be in the spring or summer, so the coat could grow out well before winter. If that prospect interests you, let us know and we might work something out.
What Llamas Are Used For
- We use our llamas for predator control, protecting livestock from coyotes, etc. We run ours with cattle and horses, these days; we ran them with sheep when we had sheep, and will do so again when we get more sheep...sheep need about all the protection they can get, I think!
- We also like llamas just because they're nice to have around: they can make good pets or companion animals for humans or other species, and I think they are just a delight to look at. I love watching ours lope across the pastures or just interact with each other.
- You can pretty them up and take them in parades. I imagine you could teach them tricks, too...though I haven't ever tried that myself. They're very intelligent critters.
- Some folks use them for pack animals...if you're a hiker, you might be interested in that, too.
- Llama fiber (which I persist in calling "wool" most days) can be used for yarn. I don't spin and haven't crocheted in years, so I haven't used any myself. One of these winters, I may just get stir-crazy and card some and learn to spin...who knows. Unless things change, that won't likely be till I'm old and crochety!
- Whatever else folks have figured out to do with them...I'd be interested in seeing if they'd pull a small cart, myself...if I had a small cart.
Thanks for looking!
